The girl, who is in year six, refused and ran off.

Terrifyingly, the man then chased her in his car, which was described by police as dark blue, near the school in Portishead.

The attempted abduction unfolded about 8.30am on Thursday - sparking police warnings of constant vigilance.

Police said they were now investigating the frightening reports.

A spokesperson said they had received reports of the incident, saying: "We've received a report of a 10-year-old girl being approached and spoken to by a man in a blue car in Portishead at about 8.30am today (Thursday).

"The girl is safe at home and we're liaising with the school and the girl's parents to obtain further details.

"We'd like to reassure the public that we'll be making enquiries to trace the driver to get his account of what happened and we'd discourage unhelpful speculation on the circumstances of this incident as it's actively under investigation.

"We always encourage vigilance and awareness of personal safety and stranger danger in schools and among young people."

Anyone with information which may help the police with their investigation should call 101 quoting log number 222 and the date of the incident (8/12).
