WHAT NEXT FOR BREXIT?

What does the Article 50 vote result mean for Brexit and will it affect the Supreme Court ruling?

A VAST majority of MPs voted to back Theresa May’s bid to begin leaving the EU in March 2017.

In a vote in Parliament on 7 December the PM’s pledge to deliver on June’s landmark referendum verdict was backed by a massive majority of 372.

But how will it affect Brexit, and what does it do to the Supreme Court hearing over whether or not MPs have the right to a vote on triggering Article 50?

How will the vote affect Brexit?

The vote in favour of triggering Article 50 in March effectively sets that date in stone as the beginning of the two-year exit negotiations with the EU.

Theresa May called the vote in order to secure parliamentary backing for Brexit in return for MPs being given more say on the details of the Brexit plan.

So while heavily reducing the chance of Parliament blocking Brexit altogether — which MPs could well have the chance to do if the Supreme Court throws out the government's appeal — it will give MPs the chance to pour over Britain's negotiating positions.

Labour's Shadow Brexit Secretary Sir Keir Starmer has said the Opposition will not allow the government to produce a vague, late plan.

The 89 MPs who voted against Brexit and May's timetable to begin it by March 31, 2017 insisted they can’t give the Government a “blank cheque”.

How will it affect the Supreme Court hearing?

The Supreme Court’s top judge did openly question whether a second vote on triggering the ‘Article 50’ exit talks were even needed following the vote in December.

Hearing the government’s legal bid to press on with Brexit without a binding Commons bill to authorise it, Lord Neuberger said it would “seem a bit odd” to the man in the street if MPs were asked to go back and do it all again.

However the top 11 judges have been in discussion over if they will agree with the High Court's ruling since December.

They are now expected to make their decision on January 24 - and whatever they decide could have a huge affect on the progress of Brexit.
