Donald Trump named Time magazine’s Person of the Year beating Nigel Farage, Beyonce, Vladimir Putin and Hillary Clinton
DONALD Trump has been named Time magazine's Person of the Year.
The businessman was handed the gong one month after he beat Democrat Hillary Clinton to become US President.
Responding to the award Trump called it a "great honour" and added that it "meant a lot to him".
The award is handed to the person who has had the biggest influence on the world - for good or bad - over the past year.
Ukip leader Nigel Farage had also been in the running for this year's gong.
The US President-elect succeeds German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who was last year's winner.
The magazine's editors placed Clinton second while hackers worldwide were third
Calling Trump the President of a "Divided States of America", Time Editor-in-Chief Nancy Gibbs said: “The challenge for Donald Trump is how profoundly the country disagrees about the answer.... 2016 was the year of his rise.
"And 2017 will be the year of his rule, and like all newly elected leaders, he has a chance to fulfil promises and defy expectations.
"For reminding America that demagoguery feeds on despair and that truth is only as powerful as the trust in those who speak it.
"For empowering a hidden electorate by mainstreaming its furies and live-streaming its fears, and for framing tomorrow’s political culture by demolishing yesterday’s, Donald Trump is TIME’s 2016 Person of the Year."
Controversial past winners of the award include Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin and Richard Nixon.
Other winners include Winston Churchill, Queen Elizabeth, Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King.
Farage was the only Brit in the running for this year's award in recognition of his role taking the UK out of the EU.
Other nominees included Russian premier Vladimir Putin, Trump's Democrat rival Hillary Clinton, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and popstar Beyonce Knowles.
