'SLOW DEATH'

We live in one of the UK’s worst seaside towns – everyone is moving away because of crime and drugs

LOCALS living in one of the UK's worst seaside towns say everyone is moving away because of crime and drugs.

Bridlington, in Yorkshire, is at risk of a "slow death", according to residents, as the tourist hotspot becomes deserted.

The increase in anti-social behaviour from yobs and substance abuse has put the once booming coastal area into decline.

What used to be rammed in the summer months with tourists is now a ghost town as people raise concerns over their safety.

Eddy Haliday, who runs a business in the area, said crime rates are rising and cops aren't doing anything about it.

He told : "There are several reasons behind the town dying a slow death.

"The crime rate in Bridlington is continually getting higher and we don’t see police doing much about it.

"The standard comment from lots of business owners now is there is no point in reporting anything as the police do not do anything, so why waste your time?"

Eddy said he's had to fork out money after ten thousands pounds worth of damage was done to the flats he rents out.

It's understood the local authority have told residents the situation is improving - but they don't agree.

He added: "Over the last few years, I think more people have left the town as they don’t feel safe living here."

It comes after homeowners recently told how the beauty spot is being ruined and they were left fearing for their safety.

Neighbours had complained of drug and alcohol misuse and loud noise blasting from a property throughout the night.

They also slammed residents from the home over waste dumped in communal areas, and damage being caused to the property.

The town was recently dubbed the "unhealthiest" as 21 takeaways were all within a five-minute walk of each other.

Bridlington boasts more than 30 chippies serving up freshly-battered cod and haddock - one for every 1,116 of its 35,000 residents.

Despite the apparent troubles, Bridlington, nestled between Scarborough and Hull, has been an unlikely hit with A-listers.

Chefs Gordon Ramsay and Nigella Lawson have sampled the town's legendary offerings - while Queen Consort CamillaBoris Johnson and food critic Jay Rayner have heaped praise.
