Cabinet tensions mounted after David Davis suggested Britain could continue paying into Brussels for a trade deal.

MPs think he has forged close ties with Chancellor Philip Hammond, a soft Brexiteer.

One said: “There has been a clear shift in the past week.

“The issue of Brexit is no longer hard or soft, black or white.

“It’s a sort of grey.”

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and International Trade supremo Liam Fox were said to be baffled by Mr Davis’s outburst.

A source said: “David’s remarks must have been cleared at the highest level.

Whenever Boris has spoken on the subject he’s been shot down.

“But suddenly we have David telling the Commons we could continue to pump cash into the EU and repeating it six hours later on TV without a peep from Downing Street.”

The perfect winter hamper for any MP, filled with political puns

IT’S the perfect hamper for any MP.

The Brexit basket includes Hammond’s jam, a dig at Chancellor Philip Hammond’s mini-budget for JAMs, those Just About Managing.

There’s also a jar of Maymite.

Feudocrem, a healing cream to treat rash decisions and settle old scores, is also included.

The hamper is the creation of former teacher Chris Waterman, of Bucks, who is marketing it purely for entertainment value.
