NAPPY SLASH

Mum’s horror as seven-week-old baby is left with cuts and rashes to her leg thanks to £2 Sainsbury’s nappy

Mum of six Sam Jeffries, said her baby Evelyn had only been wearing the Sainsbury's Little Ones nappy for an hour and a half before she noticed that she had developed a rash

A BABY suffered lacerations and a rash after wearing a Sainsbury's nappy for the first time.

Mum of the seven-week-old youngster, Sam Jeffries, said baby Evelyn had only been wearing the Sainsbury's Little Ones nappy for an hour and a half before she noticed the rash.

The 39-year-old said Evelyn had become upset and she saw the elastic from the nappy had rubbed around the top of her left leg, causing a cut and a rash.

She was given £15 compensation from Sainsbury's, and an apology, after taking to Facebook to complain.

But Sam, from Eastbourne, East Sussex, claims there is "clearly something wrong" and has since called on Sainsbury's to ensure it doesn't happy to any other child.

She said: "I couldn't leave the house at the time so I asked a friend of mine to pick up some nappies and she got those ones for me.

"I was told by a friend that they were okay to use and they hadn't had any problems so I thought they were fine.

"Usually we buy Huggies, Pampers or cheaper ones from Tesco and I've never had an issue with any of them before.

"Evelyn is my sixth child so it's not like I'm not used to nappies or how to put them on, but I've never had any issues like this with any of my other children.

"Evelyn had had the nappies on for about an hour and a half and she was grumbling and she wouldn't settle and she was upset and crying.

"So I checked her nappy to see if she needed changing and that was when I actually what had happened.

"The nappy had rubbed against her groin and there was a laceration and all of her skin was red and inflamed.

"I saw how sore it was and I was absolutely mortified. I put some cream on her and we've got some different nappies now, and the cream is helping on the wound.

"It was the elasticated bit that was digging into her, and I know that nappies do have to have elastic on them but there is clearly something wrong in the design for it.

"My other kids have had nappy rash before and it's nothing like that, they've never had a laceration from that and it's just been absolutely awful, I feel so bad for my little girl to have to go through that.

"Even though the picture is really graphic it's still much worse in person, it's quite shocking. I was absolutely mortified to see what had happened.

"It was obviously very painful for her, she wouldn't settle at all at the time."

Sainsbury's responded to Sam on Facebook, saying: "I'm so sorry about that Sam! Could you send us a photo of the products barcode and let us know what store you purchased the nappies from?

"I've arranged for £15 (3000 points) to be placed onto your Nectar card within the next 72 hours.

"I'm terribly sorry about this and hope your daughter is feeling better soon! Neither we do, Sam.

"I've logged this incident with the relevant team who will look into it further and make sure this isn't a reoccurring issue."

Sam added: "I would never buy them again, and I just want to make sure that something like this doesn't happen to another child who wears them.

"Sainsbury's have given me £15 on my nectar card as a goodwill gesture which is nice, but I want to make sure that my complaint is taken seriously and something is done about the design and make of the nappies.

"I do think that the whole design needs to be looked into by Sainsbury's. It's horrible and I don't want this to happen to another child."
