It is not known who is responsible for the attack.

The blackout has been caused by a worm that spreads via hijacked computers and damages equipment powered by Linux-based operating systems, the reported.

Routers affected by the assault include the Zyxel AMG1302, used by the Post Office.

A spokeswoman for the Post Office said: "We would like to reassure customers that no personal data or devices have been compromised.

"We have identified the source of the problem and implemented a resolution which is currently being rolled out to all customers.

"For those customers who are still having problems, we are advising them to reboot their router."

TalkTalk's D-Link DSL-3780 routers are also affected but the company said only a small percentage of  customers use them.
