Theresa May and CIA chief to warn of disaster if Donald Trump rips up Iranian nuclear arms deal
Scrapping the deal could lead to a weapons programme inside Iran
THERESA May has joined the CIA’s chief to warn of disaster if Donald Trump rips up a nuclear arms deal with Iran.
The controversial US President-elect vowed to scrap the long-brokered agreement with Teheran to halt building a doomsday arsenal.
But outgoing US spy boss John Brennan insisted that would be “the height of folly”.
He also warned: “It could lead to a weapons programme inside of Iran that could lead other states in the region to embark on their own programmes”.
Heaping pressure on Mr Trump, Downing Street insisted it was vital to see the landmark deal “properly implemented”.
The PM’s spokeswoman said: “The UK has been very clear on the importance of that agreement.
“There was substantial diplomatic effort that went into securing it and we firmly support the agreement.”
The PM’s National Security Advisor Sir Mark Lyall Grant will go to US before Christmas for talks with Mr Trump’s team.
Mr Brennan steps down in January after four years leading the CIA, to be replaced by Mr Trump’s nominee, controversial Republican Congressman Mike Pompeo.
