Spain holiday warning as swarms of stinging ‘fried egg’ jellyfish descend on beaches along coast near Alicante

BRITS heading abroad are being warned of a pesky jellyfish showing up in a holiday hot spot.

Alicante's beaches have been overrun with "fried egg" jellyfish in recent weeks, and beach goers have been warned of the creature's sting.

Video taken by a local showed an entire beach covered in the creepy jellyfish, and baby ones lurking in the shallows.

The baby jellyfish could be seen grouping together near the surface of the water.

The cotylorhiza tuberculata, or "fried egg" jellyfish, is named for its uncanny resemblance to a fried egg.

The creatures have a large "head" and long, thin tentacles, and are able to grow up to 30cm across.

Unlike other jellyfish in the region, these jellyfish have mild or no effects on humans.

If you are stung, you may experience a mild burning sensation and irritation of the skin.

The Spanish Ministry of Ecology recommends washing the area stung with sea water.

Those stung are also urged to refrain from rinsing the area in fresh water, ammonia, vinegar, or urine.

Weeks ago, rare venomous jellyfish able to inflict permanent scars through their sting were washing up on beaches in Ibiza.

The critters - called Pelagia noctiluca - have tentacles that can stretch almost 10ft.

If "mauve stingers" touch your skin the sting can feel as painful as a 9-volt battery sting.

It sparks a burning sensation, inflammation and red rashes.

Unlike usual jellyfish, they have stinging cells all over their bodies and can leave painful marks for weeks.

The best protection against stings is sun cream, which can help prevent the venom released by the tentacles from penetrating the skin.

But it's not all bad news for those who have booked up their summer holiday in Ibiza - as it's home to the top club in the world.

In a poll by the monthly music magazine, DJ Mag, Hï Ibiza was crowned the globe's best nightclub for the second year in a row.
