I pay £1,250 a month rent for a tiny home smaller than a parking space – but I love it and it has great perks
A WOMAN has revealed that she spends £1,250 a month on rent for a tiny home smaller than a parking space – but she loves the perks.
Sung Yoo, 40, chose to live in a mini-house in Santa Monica, California, after once splashing out on two rental properties.
, Sung explained how needing a change of scenery sparked her decision to give up her one-bedroom rental in New York City to make her tiny-home her primary residence.
After selling and donating most of her belongings, she put five boxes of winter items into a storage unit and moved into her mini-home.
Thr 140sq ft is an eight minute drive from the beach with plenty of hiking spots and greenery around.
But although the property is “smaller than the average size of a parking spot – which is roughly 150sq ft,” it costs £1,250 a month including utilities, parking and WiFi.
And these aren’t the only perks that Sung loves about tiny home living.
The pad is “designed in a way that doesn’t feel cramped” and boasts a main room which functions as the homeowner’s living room, office, walk-in closet and kitchen.
Sung admitted that she added a few home improvements to the property such as hooks and accessories – otherwise the place has been left exactly as it came.
The miniature home has glass doors which allows for natural light to pour into the space, and even makes it appear bigger than it is.
Indoors, the pad has LED lighting which has six different settings and can be changed depending on the mood.
Sung said: “I use softer lights in the evening and only have lights on in the bathroom in the morning”.
The 40-year-old has also brushed up on her outdoor cooking skills as there was no space in the property for a stovetop.
She now keeps a double propane burner outside the house and claims she cooks at home at least six times a week.
Her bedroom is a cozy little cave that only holds her mattress.
But a hidden drawer beneath the bed is used for storage while Sung also makes use of soft dividers and zippered pouches to keep things organised.
In the compact bathroom, there is a large round mirror, a sleek rubber sink face, wall-length shower and toilet.
The only storage space available in the dark-grey coloured bathroom is below the sink – which is perfect for the single resident to keep her toiletries.
And lastly – Sung even revealed that she saves money by not needing an air conditioning unit due to the temperature being controlled by concrete panels.
“Living with intention in a tiny space has many benefits: I save time, energy and money (especially after getting rid of my £3,500-per-month New York apartment),” she said.
“It’s very serene and grounding.
The tiny home was built by architects at Minarc Design Studio, and is parked in the garden of a single-family home.
This comes after a woman revealed that she built her own tiny home in seven days and can now live on just £160 a month.
Another couple told how they love their 235sq ft tiny home and have even able to pay off their debts thanks to the money they have saved.
And a family-of-four living in a pint-sized portable home claim they somehow seem to have more room than most people in their stationary houses.
