Man dies after plunging overboard from Stena Line ferry as police probe horror incident

A MAN has died after "falling overboard" from a Stena Line ferry.

A dramatic rescue mission was launched yesterday evening after a man plunged into the water from the Stena Superfast 8.

Rescue crews were scrambled to Loch Ryan, in Dumfries and Galloway, after the alarm was raised at 5.50pm.

The ship launched a rescue boat and recovered the man from the water after the horror fall at Belfast Way, Cairnryan.

A Coastguard helicopter was also deployed to the scene to take him to University Hospital Ayr.

Pictures from the rescue show him being winched to the rescue aircraft.

Police have now confirmed that the man was tragically pronounced dead at the hospital.

Officers have launched an investigation into the horror incident.

But they added that there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We received a report of a man having gone overboard from a ferry at Belfast Way, Cairnryan around 5.50pm on Saturday, 1 July, 2023.

“Emergency services attended and the man was taken to University Hospital Ayr, where he was pronounced dead.

“Enquiries to establish the full circumstances of the incident remain ongoing, however there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances.

“A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."

Last night, a Coastguard spokesperson said: "HM Coastguard was requested to assist the Stena Superfast 8 ferry this evening after a person fell overboard in Loch Ryan.

"The person was recovered from the water by the ferry’s fast rescue craft and taken to Ayr Hospital by the Coastguard helicopter.

"We have no further information at this time."
