Brit ‘rape’ victim Zara-Jayne Moisey speaks of ‘torture’ in filthy Dubai jail after reuniting with her family back in the UK
The 25-year-old Brit spent five days locked up after reporting she had been raped by two men from the UK
THE British woman jailed in Dubai after claiming she was raped wept as she was reunited with her family back in the UK.
Zara-Jayne Moisey yesterday recalled the five “torturous” days she spent in the filthy Al Barsha prison.
Wiping away tears, she said: “It was the most frightening experience of my life, absolute torture, and all because I went to the police about what happened in the hotel room. I will never forget the jail, it’s the worst place I have ever been.
“They kept the lights off in the day so we’d be eating in pitch blackness. Then they turned them on at night so no one could sleep.”
Zara, 25, was thrown in jail after reporting she was raped by two British men — cousins Louis Harris, 24, and David Butlin, 22.
Authorities said a video by one of the men proved the sex was consensual, and Zara faced a year in prison for extra-marital and booze offences.
She was finally allowed to leave after an appeal to ruler Sheik Mohammed from her dad — and pressure from The Sun and a human rights group.
Zara said: “The idea I consented to sex with these men is wrong. I have been portrayed as the devil but all I did was tell the truth.”
Zara had agreed to go to the men’s hotel room for drinks initially with her brother Adam, 16. She added: “I wasn’t in Dubai to go wild. I was with my young brother.
“We didn’t think twice about going for drinks after spending a couple of hours with them.”
Zara reported the alleged rape to the hotel manager straight away.
She said: “This was not me waking up the next morning regretting a sordid experience. This was the immediate aftermath.”
Zara, who had a family reunion in Widnes, Cheshire, on Friday, plans to meet rape victim charities.
A fund raiser to pay her legal fees hit £30,000. Some will go to her Dubai lawyer, but she wants to the rest to go to a rape centre.
She said: “I’ll make sure every penny of the funds so generously donated goes to victims of rape.”
