But they can look forward to warm weather by the start of this weekend.

Today there will be heavy showers in some areas, with a risk of hail and thunder.

But it will feel warm for many, with the weather hot and humid in the south east.

The showers will have passed by tonight, although there will be some mist and fog in the south west.

Tomorrow will be another day of intermittent showers and sun - although many places will remain dry.

Some of the showers will be heavy and perhaps thundery, but it will be very warm for most people.

Spokesman for the Met Office Greg Dewhurst said: "On Wednesday, it is going to be generally across the whole of the UK another day of sunny spells and some scattered showers.

"Showers could be heavy and thundery at times, particularly across the north and west of the UK.

"At the moment we don't have any warnings for thunderstorms but there could be potentially some more that get issued and perhaps at short notice.

"It is a repeat performance on Thursday with some sunshine and showers, perhaps with more of a focus on parts of England and Wales.

He added: "Temperatures are still on the warm side, perhaps a degree higher, so 29C in the South East.

"It is a similar picture in the South West to the South East, with a risk of some showers over the next couple of days.

"The showers should become less frequent for England and Wales on Friday but it does turn wetter and breezier for parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

";Temperatures again are around 30 degrees at the maximum in the South East."

This weekend the mercury will soar in the south east, with dry and hot weather forecast for most.

The yellow storm warnings of the past week will be distant memory in London, where on Saturday afternoon temperatures are predicted to reach 27C.

But the weather will turn unsettled in the north west over the weekend, with a showery breeze.

Met Office spokesman Stephen Dixon said: "By Friday there's some possibility of rain in Northern Ireland, the west of England, it will be generally drier in the South East.

"The week will be sitting relatively warmer for this time of year but more subdued than we've seen, but areas will hit heatwave criteria as we get to the weekend."
