UN and Israel on high alert after ISIS strike in the Golan Heights for the first time

Israeli Air Force fighter jets race to the battle scene and wipe out all the extremists

ISRAELI  forces killed four ISIS militants in Syria in the first direct clash between the country and the terror group.

The jihadis opened fire on a military patrol on the Israeli-controlled section of the Golan Heights, a military spokesman said.

Israeli troops responded by opening fire on the truck.

Fighter jets soon raced to the scene and destroyed the vehicle, killing all the extremists - who fought for a terror group closely aligned with ISIS - on board.

No Israeli troops were injured in the assault, which the country's top brass said it believes was a one-off incident.

UN monitors are now on site to try and stop the situation escalating.

The attack is the first time ISIS militants have directly targeted Israel, which has been able to stay largely out of the civil war in neighbouring Syria.

Commentators speculate the terror group has tried to avoid adding major regional military power Israel to its list of opponents on the ground.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commended the troops for thwarting the attack.

He said: "We are well prepared on our northern border and will not allow Islamic State elements or any other hostile elements to use the war in Syria to establish themselves close to our borders."

General Nitzan Nuriel added: "A direct attack like that on Israeli activities on Israeli side of border - this is the first time.

"They know exactly what the Israeli response would be.

"An Israeli front is the last thing IS needs at this stage".

Israel has held the disputed Golan Heights since the Six-Day War in 1967.

Spillover from the civil war in Syria has crossed into Israeli territory on several occasions, mostly in the form of mortar and projectile fire.

Earlier this month, a mortar landed in the Golan Heights following accidental spillover from internal fighting between factions in the Syrian civil war.  No injuries or damage were reported.

Israel’s Iron Dome system intercepted two long-range mortars fired towards the Golan Heights in September, marking the first time the system had been used to intercept fire from Syria.

Israel has said it holds the Syrian government responsible for any hostile activities emanating from its territory.
