One dead and nine wounded including two women in mass shooting in New Orleans
POLICE say one man is dead and nine others have been injured after a bloody shooting in New Orleans as the city’s mayor declares the violence is now ‘out of control’.
Police Superintendent Michael Harrison said during a news conference that shots were fired at roughly 1:30am on Sunday at an intersection on the famous Bourbon streets.
Mayor Mitch Landrieu described the scene as “totally unacceptable”.
“The violence continues to spin out of control with people brandishing weapons whenever they think they can,” he said.
“It’s really unfortunate,” the mayor added.
The victims were aged between 20 and 27 and included two females and eight males, according to Harrison.
One male victim died after he was rushed to hospital.
According to officials the motivation behind the shooting is unknown, but one of the injured males was arrested alongside another man on firearms charges.
Police cordoned off the crime scene outside the Krystal restaurant and Hustler Hollywood.
The uninjured man who was arrested was not linked to the shooting but had an illegally acquired firearm on his person.
Harrison said the shooting happened despite an increased police presence for an American football game on Saturday night between two universities.
According to the Superintendent police were “proactively” moving against people carrying weapons on Bourbon Street and the surrounding French Quarter.
He added that around 30 officers were in the area at the time and that officers mobilised towards the locations soon after the shots rang out.
Witness Ronnie Buendia, 25, who arks in a parking garage near the intersection, said he heard four shots . “Everybody was running into the garage trying to get away,” he said.
Over the weekend eight other people were arrested on gun charges in the French Quarter.
An investigation has been launched.
