ISIS have injured 22 Syrian rebels in a chemical gas attack that took place in the north of the country.

The Turkish military told the state-run news agency: "After a rocket was fired by Daesh (ISIS), 22 opposition members were observed to have been exposed in their eyes and bodies to chemical gas."

Mete Sohtaoğlu, a researcher studying global jihad, said chlorine was the chemical suspected of being used in the attack which took place in a village near the town of Al-Rai today.

The injured are understood to be pro-Turkey rebels who have been fighting the warped jihadis in recent months.

Local reports said that the gassed fighters were brought over the border to the Turkish town of Kilis for hospital treatment.

They said Turkish emergency workers were equipped with special chemical suits to protect themselves as they try to heal the injured.

Television pictures showed some of the Syrians being transferred on stretchers to the hospital, with the emergency workers dressed in full-body white protective clothing and gas masks.

The Turkish army is backing the fighters in an attempt to root out ISIS from the border area in a programme named Operation Euphrates Shield.

In a three-month operation, the Syrian rebels have so far captured the jihadi stronghold of Jarabulus and cleared them out of Al Rai.

They have also retaken the symbolically important town of Dabiq which ISIS followers believe will be the site of an apocalyptic battle.

Presently the Turkish-backed rebels have been trying take the town of Al Bab from the jihadis but progress has been slower as they have encountered greater resistance.

Two weeks ago the death cult fired rockets filled with explosive chemicals that burnt children's skin as they tried to keep hold of the Iraqi city of Mosul.

Images showed a five-year-old girl with discoloured and disfigured arms, legs and neck following the horrible attack earlier this month.
