He was said to be wearing an orange T-shirt and was carrying a skateboard at the time around 2.50am today.
Police have set up two cordons at Old Christchurch Road by the Bet Fred shop and on nearby Albert Road.
Old Christchurch Road is the hub of Bournemouth's booming nightlife scene and would have been busy with stag and hen parties last night.
But it has also become the worst area for violent crime in the resort town.
A doorman working at a nearby bar reported seeing a group of young people leave the area before noticing the seriously injured male lying on the pavement outside the Bef Fred shop.
He said: "They walked straight past me and kept looking back at something. They walked away quickly.
"They didn't look like they were out clubbing.
"I saw a lad lying down on the floor and ambulance paramedics rushing towards him. It didn't look like he was moving."
Detective Inspector Darren Moores, of Bournemouth CID, said: "An investigation into this incident is ongoing to establish exactly what happened.
"I would urge anyone who witnessed it or filmed any of the incident on their mobile phone to please contact Dorset Police.
"As part of our early enquiries, we are looking for an outstanding suspect who was said to be wearing an orange T-shirt and possibly carrying a skateboard.
