One of the report's targets, A Calzoa, in the north of Spain, has been slammed as the "worst dog beach in Spain".

It has reportedly become "a sandbox for dogs", according to local media.

The popular destination has been spoiled with dog waste, making it a less than desirable hotspot for holidaymakers this summer.

Other beaches include those in Malaga, as well some in the Canary Islands, Catalonia, Balearic Islands and Basque Country.

Authorities in the local area were slammed for failing to carry out proper impact assessments.

Contamination and poor management of the Spanish coast has led to the report by Environmentalist group Ecologists in Action .

12 of the black flag classifications were issued due to chemical spills, faulty sanitation and purification problems.

Six were due to chemical, light or noise pollution.

The report also said more than the 48 beaches named in the report should meet the same fate.

Some of them were slammed with the title because of effects on biodiversity, marine litter, dredging and over-development in the holiday hotspots.

It comes after an urgent holiday warning for Brits wanting to visit another Spanish beach.

Holidaymakers are being warned not to strip off in the heat - as strolling around Spanish island Majorca topless could see them hit with a hefty penalty.

Anyone without a top on or wearing a swimsuit while wandering the streets could face a fine of up to £2,500.
