Species living in the water include Stoneworts and Great Crested Newts.

As well as a vast range of wildlife, the area boasts stunning views - popular with both locals and tourists.

But those living nearby say visitors flocking to the area are effectively ruining the landscape.

The eroding banks and disturbance of the shallow pond are affecting the health of the water, with plants and wildlife now suffering.

As one of the most wildlife-rich water bodies remaining in lowland England, Hatchet Pond has the highest possible conservation status.

And now locals want tourists to stop coming in large numbers.

Forestry England have put an action plan in place in a bid to reverse the decline.

Leanne Sargeant, Senior Ecologist for Forestry England, said: "Hatchet Pond is truly a special place.

"It is a haven for nature and home to some of the UK’s rarest species.

"It is also a highly valued location for people to come and appreciate its beauty.

"Taking action to protect this incredibly important location will help to ensure its long-term survival and that it is here for many more generations to enjoy.

"Whilst we complete the work, we ask people not to park on verges or in front of barriers and to choose an alternative location.

"We look forward to welcoming people back once the works are fully completed and thank them for their patience."

According to the land manager, visitors must also help to ensure Hatchet Pond is safe.

People are now being urged not to swim or enter the water for any reason - including not letting their dogs in.

It comes after locals in Swanage, , claim that holidaymakers have been stealing their street signs as memorabilia, ruining their peaceful village.
