A 49-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The discovery came after police rushed to a car wash on Campbell Road at around 2.04pm on Sunday.

A man in his 40s had been stabbed following reports of an assault involving a man and a woman.

The victim was taken to hospital but his injuries were not life-threatening and he has since been released.

Officers then went to a home on Flax Street and arrested the woman from Stoke-on-Trent in connection with the stabbing.

They then found the children unresponsive and further arrested her on suspicion of murder.

Cops confirmed the woman was known to the children.

Neighbour Jack Taft, 25, told how he had seen the woman "walking down the road in her red dressing gown" before he heard "screaming".

He said: “I heard screaming and a man who I know was stabbed allegedly by his partner while he was in the waiting room at the premises.

“My dad saw him being stretchered away to hospital."

A neighbour, who has spoken to the dad since he was released from hospital, said: “He is absolutely devastated that he has lost his two beautiful kids. He is heartbroken.

“He loved those children and did everything for them. It is heartbreaking for the family and their friends and neighbours."

Detective Chief Inspector Cheryl Hannan said: “Our thoughts are very much with the family and friends of the children. I cannot image the pain and shock they are feeling.

“We also understand the concern felt locally around this incident and the speculation around what has happened.

“We can now confirm that the two people who lost their lives are an 11-year-old boy and a seven-year-old girl.

“Our priority was to inform the family before confirming the ages of the children. They are currently being supported by specially trained officers.

“The woman arrested is known to the children. We don’t believe there to be any wider threat to the public at this time.

“Our focus remains on finding out more about what happened yesterday and supporting the family at this deeply distressing and tragic time.”
