Boy, 11, mown down by hit-and-run driver on crossing outside Bow Road Tube station is fighting for life

Youngster is in a critical condition with a head injury after he was run over while crossing the road in East London at 8.13am today

A BOY aged 10 is fighting for life after being mown down in an apparent hit and run on a pedestrian crossing outside Bow Road Underground station in East London this morning.

The car involved did not stop at the scene and was found abandoned nearby, police said.

An air ambulance was scrambled to help the young victim, who is said to be in a critical condition in hospital with a serious head injury.

Georgie Lord said on Twitter: "Horrendous hit & run accident near Bow Rd station.

"My girlfriend saw the car speeding along, ploughing towards commuters crossing the road :("

Another witness replied: "Saw this on the way to work. Didn't look good. Thoughts with friends and family."

Scotland Yard said: "Police were called at 8.13am on Friday to Bow Road to reports of a road traffic collision.

"It was reported that a vehicle had been in collision with a child pedestrian.

"The injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

"Local road closures are in place while emergency services are at the scene."

A 25-year-old was later arrested in East London, police said.

London Ambulance Service sent an ambulance crew, a first responder and the air ambulance.

A spokesman said: "We treated the boy at the scene for head injury and took him as a priority to a major trauma cenre in East London."

The crash scene is just yards from where an undercover cop was stabbed by a teen gang near the Bow Bells pub further along Bow Road earlier this week.
