Hundreds queue in freezing -6C temperatures for opening of new Aldi supermarket

DEDICATED bargain hunters battled sub-zero temperatures today - as they fought to be the first customers at their new local ALDI.

Shoppers in Newton Mearns, near Glasgow, queued around the new Aldi store after it promised prizes to the first 100 customers through the door at 8am.

The 'golden tickets' offered a chance to win a deep fat fryer, digital alarm clocks and a 48in television.

Over 500 people expressed an interest in the grand opening on Facebook - and some reported queuing alongside an estimated 200 people as temperatures plummeted to -6C.

However, it wasn't all plain sailing - as disappointed punters complained online that the store's checkouts went down within an hour of opening.
