A PAEDO who raped his step-granddaughter, six, after telling her to ‘open your legs for poppy’ has lost an appeal against his sentence.

The man, from Queensland, Australia, sexually abused the girl for years, until she was 14 years old.

He was found guilty of rape, maintaining an unlawful sexual relationship with a child and aggravated indecent treatment earlier this year and sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison.

But the vile pervert had tried to get his sentence reduced by quashing his rape conviction, News Mail reported.

Jurors heard shocking details of the abuse the girl suffered at the hands of the man who was supposed to be looking after her.

Now 17, she recalled how her “poppy” would make her get into bed with him before sticking his hands down her shorts during what he called “hugging time”.

Much of the abuse happened on family holidays on the Gold Coast in eastern Australia, documents revealed.

The brave victim told the court: "I remember him saying 'Can you open your legs for pop? Open your legs for poppy'.”

Jurors also listened to a recorded phone conversation between the pair in which he apologised to the girl for abusing her in the past.

When asked why he did what he did, he replied: “I don't know darling. I've apologised for what I've done and I can't do anything about it. I can't take it back.”

The man – who can’t be named in order to protect the identity of his victim – had claimed there was insufficient evidence he had raped the girl.

But Justice Phillip Morrison disagreed, dismissing his appeal.
