Where is it?

The island is off the south west coast of mainland Wales, near Tendby in Pembrokeshire.

At its closest point, Caldey lies 1km south of the mainland, but usual access to the island is by boat from 2km away.

The island itself is about 2.4km long and 1.6km wide.

It lies in Carmarthen Bay on the northern side of the Bristol Channel and is made up on two islands which become separated at high tide - Caldey Island and Little Caldey Island, which is sometimes known as St Margaret Island or St Margaret's Isle.

What is on it?

The island has about 500 acres of mostly farmable land and greenhouses on the island produce vegetables for the city of Cardiff.

It has a single island village but it best known for the monastery.

The island was bought by Anglican benedictine monks in 1906 and it was this group that built the monastery and abbey which sits in the centre of the island.

Now it is home to about 40 residents and a group of about 18 Cistercian monks.

The monks farm the island, mainly raising dairy cattle and making items including cheese, shortbread, perfumes and toiletries.
