It comes two weeks after he was questioned after confessing to the murder of student Elizabeth Chau, who went missing aged 19 in 1999.

Officers from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team interviewed him under caution and in the presence of his solicitor inside Frankland Prison, in Co Durham, on Friday.

Ex-doorman Bellfield, 54 — serving three life terms for murders including that of 13-year-old Milly Dowler — is thought to have confessed to attacking Sarah Spurrell, 23, with a hammer in Hastings, East Sussex, in January 2004.

He is also linked to an attack three hours later on the same road, another in nearby St Leonards and one at Hinchley Wood service station in Surrey in July 1994.

A source said: “He has admitted some and others he has denied.

“But there does not seem to be much doubt about the attack on Sarah.”
