Danielle, whose son Kayden, is only six, was rushed to Edinburgh’s Royal Infirmary but died a short time later.

A murder investigation has been launched and a 16-year-old boy has been arrested and charged in connection with her death.

Uniformed officers stood guard at a cordon put in place at the street’s junction with Leith Walk, and a tent could be seen sitting on tram tracks in the middle of the road.

Pals turned out to pay tribute and leave flowers at the scene of the incident, near the Foot of the Walk pub.

Caroline Russell, 44, from Restalrig, said: “She was very lovable, caring and always thought of other people before herself.

“It’s very sad. I was shocked to get a phone call this morning and find out what had happened. I feel for her little boy.

“She was born and bred in Leith. I can’t believe it, I’m absolutely broken.”

Devastated friends and family also took to social media to pay tribute.

Her cousin John Davidson wrote: “My beautiful Danielle Davidson I am broken. Life’s so cruel: you were a fighter, you don’t deserve this.

"Not everyone understood you and that made you unique but those in your life did and now you’re gone.”

Friend Jennifer Spears, who said she had seen Danielle just days before she died, wrote: “It’s heartbreaking. She was doing amazing.

My heart is breaking for her wee boy. Such a cruel cruel world.”
Another friend said: “I will never forget what this remarkable woman did for me when I was a kid.”

The alarm was raised following a report of a disturbance at 7:50pm on Thursday evening.

Detective Inspector Bob Williamson of the Major Investigation Team (East) said: “You will see a significant police presence in the area whilst we carry out investigations. Officers will be carrying out door-to-door enquiries and gathering CCTV footage which could provide the inquiry team with additional information.

“Through our investigation so far, we are aware that a number of members of the public were in the area at the time, some of whom witnessed the incident and others who came to her aid and we are asking them to come forward.

“I would asked anyone who was in the area of Constitution Street between 7.45pm and 8pm to get in touch.

”Detectives have set up an online portal to encourage members of the public to submit information, including any recorded footage.

The Major Incident Public Portal (MIPP) is a website that gives the public access to a form so they can send information directly to the major investigation team and can be accessed here:
