Twitter pokes fun at Donald Trump’s invitation for Nigel Farage to be appointed Britain’s US ambassador
TWITTER users took great pleasure in poking fun at Donald Trump’s invitation for Nigel Farage to be appointed Britain’s ambassador to the US today.
A range of characters were suggested as better than the interim Ukip leader, after the President-Elect tweeted overnight that he thought Mr Farage would be great at the job.
Mr Farage himself has said he was "flattered" by the calls, and that he wanted to help cement relations between the two countries.
But Number 10 has slapped down the idea from the President-elect – insisting there is “no vacancy”.
In a highly unusual intervention that breaks with diplomatic protocol, Mr Trump announced on Twitter he thought the interim Ukip leader would do a “great job” in the role.
The real estate mogul said “many people” wanted to see him as the UK’s most senior diplomat in Washington, after the pair struck up a friendship during his election campaign.
Mr Farage responsed: “I’m very flattered by the comments and I have said since I met the president-elect that I would like to do anything I can to act in a positive way to help relationships between our two countries.”
It will cause fresh embarrassment for the Prime Minister and the so-called ‘special relationship’, who was only the 10th world leader to speak to Mr Trump after his victory over Hillary Clinton.
And a new poll out yesterday from ICM showed the public did not want the Ukipper to be put in the House of Lords either. Just one in five said he should, and around 60% said he should not be made a peer.
Social media users online did not agree with the idea of Mr Farage as an ambassador either, and took great pleasure in putting forward their own suggestions.
Basil Fawlty, Julian Assange and even Larry the Downing Street cat were suggested as better alternatives for the position than Mr Farage.
