Desperate search for missing diver who vanished off Scots coast
A DESPERATE search has been launched for a diver in the Pentland Firth.
Coastguard and RNLI rescue crews were scrambled after the alarm was raised around 6pm today.
Two lifeboats were dispatched from Longhope in Orkney and Wick in Caithness.
A Coastguard helicopter from Sumburgh airport in Shetland is assisting in the desperate search operation.
Coastguard rescue teams from Kirkwall and St Margaret's Hope in Orkney are also involved.
The Pentland Firth is a stretch of sea between Caithness in the north of Scotland and Orkney.
There are many shipwrecks in the channel and the area is popular among divers.
A HM Coastguard spokesperson said: "HM Coastguard is coordinating the search for a diver in Pentland Firth. The alarm was raised today (Tuesday 16th May) at about 6pm.
"The Coastguard helicopter from Sumburgh has been sent to assist, along with RNLI boats from Longhope and Wick, and Coastguard Rescue Teams from Kirkwall and St Margaret's Hope. Three nearby vessels are also supporting."
The RNLI has been contacted for comment.
