Who was Pauline Floyd?

Pauline Floyd was a 16 year old sewing factory worker at the time of her death in 1973.

She had been out clubbing with her friend and co-worker Geraldine Hughes when the two went missing on their way home.

What happened to Pauline Floyd?

Pauline had left a club in Swansea with her friend Geraldine one Saturday night.

At that time, taxis were expensive and as factory workers earning £16 a week, they couldn’t afford to get a taxi home.

It was raining that night and an eyewitness account saw the girls at a bus stop sheltering from the rain when a white car swerved to a stop to pick them up.

It was common for people to hitchhike so the pair got into the car, unaware of the danger they would be in.

Pauline was found dead the next day in woodland in nearby Llandarcy by a passerby walking their dog.

The Guardian described the gruesome scene of their bodies as looking like broken mannequins.

Who committed the Steeltown Murders?

The Steeltown murders were committed by Joseph Kappen.

Kappen went undetected for 30 years and died before he could answer for his crimes.

How was Joe Kappen caught?

Joe was caught after advancements were made in DNA testing technology.

In the early 2000s DNA found on the victims matched the DNA of a car thief.

The car thief turned out to be the son of Joseph, who was a child at the time of the murders.

From this, investigators were able to convince Kappen’s ex-wife and daughter to supply swabs for testing.

Their DNA also matched to the 30 year old DNA, just like Joseph’s son.

This DNA discovery eventually led to the body of Joseph Kappen being exhumed.

Tissue samples from his teeth and femur confirmed the DNA from the murder of Pauline belonged to Joseph Kappen.
