THIS is the incredible moment a self-driving car effortlessly takes to the road, using its "eyes" to avoid collisions with pedestrians and other vehicles while getting from A to B.

The vehicle, designed by Tesla, is showing off its autopilot technology by taking to the road.

And while there is someone behind the wheel, the video points out: "The person in the driving seat is only there for legal reasons.

"He is not doing anything. The car is driving itself."

The car is seen cruising down regular roads, stopping at traffic lights and slowing down when pedestrians are crossing the road.

A satellite navigation device has programmed its destination and it drives through the winding roads of Los Altos, in Silicon Valley, California.

The navigation system interprets obstacles such as other cars, pedestrians or cyclists differently, having a colour-coded system to determine if they are an "object" or an "in-path object".

The video was first shared by Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, on Twitter.

After the journey is complete, the driver gets out of the car.

That's when the Tesla vehicle shows off one of its most impressive features - the ability to reverse-park itself.

Mr Musk, the man behind the company, is the co-founder of PayPal, which was sold to eBay in 2002 for £1.2 billion.

Just last month, he outlined his plans for people to be living in glass domes on the surface of Mars within just 40 years.

The idea is to reduce the "risk of human extinction" by setting up a colony on Mars.
