Mike Pence raves about ‘Hamilton’ despite boos – risking Donald Trump’s fury
TWO days after being booed and lectured at Broadway musical Hamilton, US Vice President-elect Mike Pence has called the show “incredible” – breaking from Donald Trump who has demanded the “highly overrated” Broadway cast apologise to his running mate.
“Hamilton is just an incredible production,” Pence said of the Friday show with his daughter and her cousins. “It was real joy to be there.”
The Vice President-Elect brushed off the smattering of boos upon his entrance as what “freedom sounds like” and said he wasn’t bothered the cast singled him for a curtain call political statement.
“I wasn’t offended by what was said. I’ll leave it to others whether that was the appropriate venue to say it,” Pence said on Fox News Sunday.
Actor Brandon Victor Dixon acknowledged Pence in closing remarks and said he hopes the show — with its diverse cast — inspired him to be inclusive to all Americans: “We hope you will hear us out.”
Trump tweeted over the weekend the cast “harassed” Pence. He’s since deleted that statement but woke Sunday still holding a grudge.
“The cast and producers of Hamilton, which I hear is highly overrated, should immediately apologise to Mike Pence for their terrible behaviour,” Trump tweeted at 6:22 am Sunday — his fourth weekend Tweet about the show.
But Pence said Sunday he isn’t asking for an apology and instead said he understand the disappointment and anxiousness of Hillary Clinton backers.
“I just want to reassure every American that in the days ahead I’m very confident that they are going to see President Elect Donald Trump be a president for all the people and we embrace that principle,” Pence said.
