GRISLY GLUE INJURY

Dad could be left with permanent eye damage after ‘ruptured’ tube shoots superglue straight into his face

Ben Wyatt, from Somerset, screamed in agony following the freak accident

A DAD-of-two fears he has suffered permanent eye damage after accidentally squirting superglue in his face from a split tube.

Self-employed tiler Ben Wyatt, 30, said the container of UHU adhesive apparently ruptured as he tried to open it.

It shot into his eyeball and he instinctively squinted and the glue stuck his eyelashes together.

Ben, who was in excruciating pain, eventually managed to tear the lids apart and rushed straight to A&E.

But five days on, his vision is still blurry and eye specialists have told him he has potentially permanent 'corneal erosion'.

Ben, of Kilmersdon, Somerset, said it could be a fault with the batch which he bought from a discount store in nearby Frome and has contacted UHU to complain.

He said: "I use superglue quite a lot and this tube came in a mini pack of three.

"We'd gone out to buy some cat collars but one of them was too big so I cut it down and went to glue it back together with the superglue.

"It was a brand new container but as I twisted it open, the side of the tube split.

"The glue projected and it went straight into my eyeball.

"Your initial reaction is to squint, like having a fly in your eye."

He added: "I was screaming in absolute agony. I thought my eye might be shut forever."

Luckily, Ben managed to rip his lashes apart and rushed to hospital in Bath where he has had several follow up appointments.

He said: "There's a possibility that I've permanently lost a bit of my eyesight.

"I can see but if I shut my good eye there's not much function.

"I'm hoping that in the long run, it will get back to normal.

"Since the accident I can't see out of my eye and I've had bad headaches. It's quite scary."

He added: "I don't know if it's just a freak accident but I only applied a little bit of pressure so I think it's something to do with the strength of the tube.

"If I had stood on it, dropped it or was really forcing it, I would understand, but that wasn't the case.

"If a child was by me or anything like that, anything could have happened."

UHU said: "We have recently been informed of the unfortunate incident which happened to Mr Wyatt.

"It is the first time we have encountered such a complaint on one of our super glue products.

"As we need to understand exactly what has happened in this individual case we are gathering all necessary information.

"We are investigating this topic very seriously in order to take the right conclusions and actions."
