Man mauled by dog as armed cops gun down ferocious beast following savage attack

COPS have shot dead a dog after a man was viciously mauled.

The victim was "seriously injured" in the savage attack in Derby.

One man has been arrested in connection with the incident which took place earlier today, Derbyshire Police said.

Armed officers were forced to gun down the dog after assessing it presesented a significant risk to the public.

A cordon remains in place and some of the surrounding roads have been closed off.

There is no ongoing risk to the public but officers remain on the scene and in the local area as the investigation continues.

DOG CRISIS

Last month it was revealed dangerous dog attacks have risen by 34 per cent in England and Wales over the past five years.

Just earlier this week a three-year-old boy was rushed to hospital with head injuries after being mauled by an XL Bully dog, at a property in Rotherham, south Yorkshire.

Officers seized the dog from the home, and one woman, 42, was arrested, but later released on bail.

Giorgi Fullbirg-Taylor, 10, was attacked in February while playing football with his friends and suffered "severe" bite wounds in a savage attack in Yorkshire.

Two months after the event the youngster is still unable to move his arm properly and is terrified when he leaves the house.

His mum told The Sun Online: "Giorgi is absolutely petrified of even leaving the garden, he is terrified of dogs even on leads, he won't walk near a dog, he screams if one is off lead."

Dog behaviourist Nanci Creedon believes that Britain's dog attack epidemic is about to get worse as we head into the summer.

She warns that a big trigger for dogs is putting them in situations they are not familiar with, such as taking them on day trips, holidays and even summer barbeques.
