He has now been charged with offences under the Official Secrets Act.

It follows an investigation by the Met's Counter Terrorism Command.

The offences are in relation to section 2 and section 8 of the Act.

Section 2 concerns any Crown or government worker who makes a damaging disclosure of any information.

While section 8 involves the safeguarding of information.

Newsome spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth when he appeared at Westminster Magistrates' court on Saturday.

He looked blank in the dock wearing a grey prison t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms.

He has been remanded in custody and will appear in court on Friday.

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson told The Sun: "We can confirm the arrest of a serving member of the Armed Forces.

"This matter is the subject of an ongoing investigation, therefore it would be inappropriate to comment further."
