THERESA May should force energy firms to put all customers on their cheapest tariffs, says a top MP.

Six out of 10 of all households are currently paying the most expensive tariffs after slipping onto them over the years.

That has left the majority of consumers forking out £305 a year too much for their gas and electricity.

Dubbing the move “a game changer”, the Work and Pensions committee boss also insisted the ‘Big Six’ energy firms can afford the move, having been able to pay out billions in dividends to their shareholders.

Mr Field told The Sun: “It could make all the difference for those grafters having to walk a tightrope between being able to feed their families, or having to use a food bank”.

No10 is drawing up a fresh plan to clamp down on the “rip-off” energy market.

It also emerged yesterday that millions face paying more for heating this winter with the first energy price hikes for three years likely within weeks.
