WAR OF THE WORLDS WARNING

Humanity is NOT ready for the arrival of aliens and could be easily wiped out by invading ETs, expert warns

There is 'no protocol' for the event of an alien invasion, top astronomer says

MANKIND is not prepared for aliens making contact with earth -- and if they are violent they could wipe us out quickly, a leading expert has warned.

Veteran alien hunter Seth Shostak said: "I don't know of any protocol if they land".

"I've never heard of any such thing, and I'd be surprised if there was one", he told .

The senior astronomer at SETI -- the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Insititute -- said that scientists and governments have only focused on what to do if we find intelligent life in a faraway galaxy.

He said there may be top secret defence plans "in the bowels of the Pentagon", but that he is not aware of any.

And if this visiting extraterrestrial civilisation turns out to be and invading force, humanity's best defences will not put up much of a fight anyway.

Alien lifeforms that are intelligent enough to reach earth will have military capabilities far greater than ours, Shostak said.

A War of the Worlds-style battle between humanity and the conquering ETs "would be like taking on the Roman legions with the US Air Force", he told the website.

Not even the joining of forces between otherwise hostile nations would be enough to fend off our alien foe, he warned.

Based on our inability to deescalate global nuclear capabilities -- an "existential threat" according to Shostak -- it is not likely we would be able to fight as a unified worldwide power.

In fact, it could lead to deeper fractures between nations competing for the ear of our alien overlords.

"There's immediately going to be competition — 'Well, these guys are in touch with the aliens. We've got to get in there. Who knows what sort of good stuff the aliens might be telling them?'" Shostak said.
