Number of NHS patients left stranded on hospital trolleys for longer than half a day trebles in a year
Almost 400 people were stranded without a hospital bed for 12 hours or more in the first quarter of this year
THE number of patients left stuck on a hospital trolley for at least half a day has trebled compared to the same time last year, shock figures revealed yesterday.
Almost 400 people were stranded without a hospital bed for 12 hours or more in the first quarter of this year.
The figures showed some patients were waiting for longer than a day with one patient waiting a staggering 45 hours to be admitted to a bed in a psychiatric hospital.
According to NHS England more than 1,000 patients waited for more than half a day in 2015-16 compared to just over 100 in 2011-12.
Analysis of the Freedom of Information figures show the number of patients waiting for four hours or more has increased by more than 300 per cent since 2010.

More than 400,000 people were forced to wait on trolleys in 2015-16.
The worst offending hospital with the longest trolley wait was King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust at 45 hours and 50 minutes.
Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary Jonathan Ashworth described the shocking figures as unacceptable.
He said: “These figures expose the reality of what’s really going on in our NHS under the Tories, hospital beds full, A&Es overflowing and patients waiting for longer than 12 hours on trolleys waiting to be given a bed on a ward. It’s just not good enough.
“Patients deserve better and the Government needs to tell us what they are going to do about it.”
