Two ‘treasured’ teens dead & two others in hospital after horror Galway crash as school offers support to grieving pals

TWO teens have died after a horror car crash in ­Galway which has left two other youngsters in hospital.

Lucas Joyce and Kirsty Bohan, both aged 14, died in the collision at Pollacullaire, on the outskirts of Headford, Co Galway, early yesterday morning.

Two boys and two girls — all aged 13 or 14 — were in the car at the time of the smash. 

Lucas Joyce was pronounced dead at the scene and Kirsty Bohan passed away in hospital.

The other girl and boy are being treated for serious injuries in . 

The accident happened at around 5.45am on a narrow stretch of road  just off the N84 Headford to ­Ballinrobe road.

No other vehicle was involved and it is believed their car may have collided with a tree.

The two injured teenagers, a 13-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl, are both from Headford.

All four teenagers are students at Presentation College Headford and the school’s critical incident plan has been activated.

The school, which is shut for the Easter holidays, will open this week to offer support to the students’ friends and classmates.

A letter has been sent out to pupils and parents outlining the support available in the coming days.

It told them: “The school has experienced the sudden and tragic deaths of two treasured members of our PCH community.

"We are deeply saddened by these deaths. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of these students.”

It added: “Over the course of the coming days, please keep a close eye on your child and allow him/her to express their feelings without criticism.

DEEP SHOCK

"We anticipate that the next few days will be very difficult for ­everyone and we will be available as a supportive community, as needed.”

Board of management chair Cllr Mary Hoade said the town is in deep shock.

She said: “I am just on my way into the school as the critical ­incident plan is being implemented. The area is shocked and deeply ­saddened by the accident.

“It is dreadful what has happened and our thoughts and prayers are with the families involved.”

Speaking on Drivetime, the Catholic Primate of All Ireland, Eamon Martin expressed his sadness.

He said: “Our hearts and our prayers really go out to the families impacted this evening.”

closed the roads near to the scene of the accident and have appealed for witnesses. They asked  any drivers with dash-cam footage to contact them.

They are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have been on the L6127 at Glennagarraun, Balyfruit, near Headford, between 5.30am and 6am.
