Rafel Jeanne, 24, sadly died in the crash, his funeral was held on April 4

More than a month on from the nightmare Sophie’s mum, Anna Certowicz, said her daughter is now “awake, eating and talking” and added that “miracles do happen.”

Speaking to Anna, 42, said: “She will be home before we know it.”

Sophie and her friends were reported missing after not returning home from a night out in Newport, Wales, on March 4 this year.

A police search was launched after their families became concerned for their welfare, saying it was “out of character” for them to go off the radar.

Tragically two days later on March, 6, cops confirmed that a car had been found on the A48 near Cardiff, with three of the five occupants tragically killed.

The Volkswagen Tiguan that the friends had been travelling had flew off the road and into trees.

Eve Smith, 21, Darcy Ross, 21, and Rafel Jeanne, 24, were all tragically found dead.

Sophie and fellow survivor Shane Loughlin, 32, were taken to the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.

The wreckage of the crash had been discovered by Matthew Pace, 45, and his son Lewis – who was close friends with Rafel.

Sophie had been semi-conscious in the wreckage for two days calling for help.

Speaking at the time, her mum said: “There’s no words to describe it. I can’t imagine how long it’s going to take for her to get over this. She’s going to need a lot of support.”

But Sophie is now making good progress and according to her mum is able to read the many Facebook messages from people wishing her well.

In one post, Ms Certowicz said: “Thank you all so much Sophie Russon can read all of this now and see all the love and kindness we’ve all received and we are all truly grateful and thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

Sophie replied to the post: “Thank you all so much”.

Hundreds of people attended a vigil at the crash site – and around 400 turned up to last week’s funeral of Rafel.

Mourners lined the street while quad bikes were adorned with blue ribbons in tribute.

The remaining funerals are set to take place this month.
