What is PhotoScan? New Google app makes it easy to digitise prints – here’s what we know
IT’S an issue faced families the world over, with attics and cupboards full of old treasured prints that just won’t cut the mustard in this digital age.
Google have heard you and have launched the app PhotoScan by Google Photos.
On initial release, the app is now available to download for Android and Apple iOS devices - and it's free.
What does PhotoScan by Google Photos do?
With the enticing strap line “Photos from the past meet scanner from the future” the app is designed to bring your old snaps right into the digital age.
It aims to scan photos in seconds without any glare and automatically crop, enhance and rotate them before tucking them safely away with your Google Photos.
How does PhotoScan work?
Once you have installed the app it is easy to get started.
Select the photo that you would like to upload and start the scan by holding your phone above the photo and tapping the button to take a picture.
You then have to move your phone around to make sure that the circle on the screen is over each of the four dots.
Once you have done this wait for the photo to be processed and go to the bottom right of the screen and tap on the photo thumbnail.
Select the photo and you can then adjust the corners and rotate it if necessary.
To save your newly scanned images to your devices tap “Save all”.
What’s the reaction to PhotoScan?
The reception for the app has on the whole been positive.
At the time of writing, PhotoScan had received 1,865 five star reviews compared to just 170 one star reviews.
One user said: “It’s amazing and I am really glad Google is supporting this.”
While another added: “This is an awesome start.”
There are, however, a number of negative reviews for the application.
One user said: “I get better quality taking a photo with the general on-board camera app.”
While another wasn’t impressed with the scan saying: “The photos come out very dark, even with the use of flash.”
