Twitter suspends several ‘alt-right’ accounts in ‘Stalinist purge’ following Donald Trump’s election victory
Movement made up of white nationalist commentators left shaken by 'digital execution'
TWITTER has suspended several accounts run by prominent members of the American 'alt-right' movement a week on from Donald Trump's election victory.
The alt-right is made up of digitally savvy far right and white nationalist commentators who largely came out in support of the Republican candidate.
Among the big names suspended is Richard Spencer, who also had the accounts of his National Policy Institute think tank and online mag Radix Journal taken down.
Spencer likened the raft of suspensions -- which included the accounts of Paul Town, Pax Dickinson, Ricky Vaughn and John Rivers -- to the infamous 1934 Nazi slaughter the 'Night of the Long Knives'.
In a YouTube video Spencer -- who has been described as prominent white supremacist leader -- said a "Stalinist purge" was taking place online.
He said that while he was alive "physically", his digital presence had been "executed", reports.
Twitter has refused to comment on the suspensions, citing privacy and security reasons.
In July the social media platform banned prominent Brit rightwinger Milo Yiannopolous following accusations he was abusing Ghostbusters actor Leslie Jones.
