Number of hotels housing migrants doubles to nearly 400 in just five months

THE number of hotels housing migrants has doubled to nearly 400 in just five months, figures show.

Country homes are now being used to put up asylum-seekers, as well as hotels at golf courses and airports.

Some 363 are in England, 20 in Northern Ireland, ten in Scotland and two in Wales, the BBC says.

The total is up from about 200 in November.

More than 51,000 people are being housed, costing taxpayers £6million a day.

An extra 100 hotels, with 9,000 places, were procured from September to November.

Home Office minister Robert Jenrick yesterday accused some nations of not taking their fair share.

He said: “There are fewer hotels in Scotland than there are in Kensington. There are more hotels in Earl’s Court than there are in Labour Wales.”

He said officials were on track to clear the backlog for all who arrived in the country before last year.

Home Secretary Suella Braverman wants to house more migrants in theme parks and even cruise ships.

The Home Office said “it is committed to making every effort to reduce hotel use”.
