SHOCKING footage shows the moment a waitress allegedly tried to kidnap a customer's baby.

The mum walked into the restaurant in the city of Shiyan in China's Hubei Province and placed her 10-month-old son on the counter.

The mum later left the restaurant briefly with her child in the woman's care.

When she returned a few minutes later the waitress and the baby were nowhere to be seen.

She then left the restaurant and made her way through the city.

Fortunately CCTV footage showed her movements and her plan was foiled by Chinese cops two hours later.

Chinese media outlets have reported that the waitress, who was arrested and taken into custody, confessed to snatching the boy because she wanted to adopt him.
