The unconscious man was discovered by motorists near an exit on Ronda Litoral Road, which encircles the city, after he fell at least 20ft from a bridge above.

Prior to the fall, the Canadian was outside a nearby McDonald's with two friends, who told police they were mugged by five yobs.

According to local media, cops initially claimed his attackers may have thrown him from the bridge during the altercation.

However, it has now emerged he may have jumped to his death after miscalculating the 20ft drop.

Emergency services were called to the scene and medics were able to stabilise the man and rushed him to Hospital del Mar.

He remained there in a "critical condition" but died several hours later.

A Mossos d’Esquadra regional police spokesman said: "Officers from the Investigative Unit of the Santi Marti police station are investigating the incident that took place on Wednesday morning in the district of Santi Marti.

"We were alerted about a fight and a person who had plunged from a bridge over the Ronda Litoral.

"The man was transferred to hospital in a serious condition but died several hours later.

"The possibility this could be an accidental death has not been ruled out."

The tourist’s death follows several violent muggings of foreigners in Barcelona including British holidaymakers.

In September 2022, a Brit was stabbed in the city while trying to fight off thieves who had snatched his bag.

The petty crime was filmed on a pedestrian's smartphone, however, the thief managed to get away after appearing to put a blade to the victim’s face.

The terrifying incident followed another broad daylight mugging of a US man in June.

The American had his designer watch stolen outside the five-star Mercer Hotel in Barcelona.
