The five roles are available at a remote outpost 9,000 miles away at Port Lockroy on Goudier Island.

Successful applicants will have to endure temperatures which rarely get above freezing and live without running water or wifi.

Duties will include daily counts to help protect the island’s colony of 1,000 or so gentoo penguins.

The positions are being offered by the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust on the 80th anniversary of its base on the island.

A base leader, a postmaster, wildlife monitor and two conservation carpenters are needed.

They will run the base — three wooden buildings with a museum, shop and the world’s most southerly post office.

Record numbers applied for the jobs last year.

UKAHT chief Camilla Nichol said: “It’s an opportunity like no other, living in a landscape that makes you feel pure awe and wonder.”

Applicants will be chosen from online interviews followed by a two-day selection event.
