Donald Trump insists he ‘loves’ protests as furious Americans demonstrate against his presidential win
President-elect changes tack mere hours after slamming the media for 'inciting' protests across the nation in Twitter rant
DONALD Trump quickly changed tack after taking to Twitter to slam “professional protesters, incited by the media” – instead declaring his “love” for demonstrators as the US erupted in chaos for the second night in a row following his election.
The President-elect tweeted: “Love the fact that small groups of protesters last night have passion for our great country. We will all come together and be proud!"
His efforts to smooth the divide between Democrats and Republicans come as protests organised by disillusioned Hillary Clinton voters took place in Portland, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Oakland and New York on Thursday night.
Furious voters smashed car windows, burned vehicles and store fronts as they took to the streets with placards depicting Donald Trump as the devil.
In Oakland, demonstrations turned violent, with crowds throwing bottles at police officers.
Police officers were out in full force to contain the crowds, kitted out in gas masks and riot gear.
Los Angeles Chief of Police, Charlie Beck, urged protesters to act peacefully while demonstrating against Trump in a press conference.
“However destruction of property and vandalism will not be tolerated."
He said: “Exercise your rights responsibly and respect our city.”
Outside the White House, protesters carried signs reading “Donald Trump is a racist” and “Undocumented and here to stay!”
Police officers have erected concrete barriers around the building, which is home to Trump, his wife Melania and their son Barron.
A no-fly zone has also been imposed over the tower, which will remain in place until Trump’s inauguration in January 2017.
