Donald Trump snubbed by Obamas as traditional White House ‘welcome’ photo-op is missed after bitter US election campaign

Outgoing President and First Lady usually pose for photographs with election winner ... but not this time

BARACK Obama snubbed President-elect Donald Trump by passing up the long-held tradition of having a photograph outside the White House together.

Outgoing leader Obama met victorious billionaire Trump for the first time on Thursday when they held what was described as productive transitional talks.

Meanwhile, First Lady Michelle Obama held a conversation with Melania Trump as the dust settled on the most bitter and earth-shattering US election in history.

But despite the niceties, the divisive way with which the campaign was fought was still present, the reports.

It is tradition for the outgoing President and First Lady to welcome the election winner at the south entrance to the White House for a photo-op -- a tradition that the Obamas failed to uphold.

Both President Obama and wife Michelle campaigned vigorously against Republican Trump -- backing Democrat colleague Hillary Clinton.

Trump also did not pull punches when it came to trashing the President's record -- vowing to repeal healthcare reforms and scrap trade agreements.

Since the extraordinary election Obama has said he is "heartened" by Trump's vow to "heal" divisions, while Trump has said he has "great respect" for the President.

Trump will be sworn into office on January 20.
