The lorry driver, from Lincolnshire, believes that if the woman had been just a few inches shorter she and her child would both have been killed as he would not have seen them.

Stef said: "She came right out of my blind spot and I only managed to see her because I spotted the top of her head in time.

"Luckily she was as tall as she was. If she had been just a couple of inches shorter then I wouldn't have seen her and I definitely would have hit her.

"I didn't see that she had a pram at first either. I couldn't see the child.

"She just pushed her child out into the road.

"I slammed the breaks on as fast as I could as she ran across the road.

"I'd just been waiting at the red light. The roads were quite quiet. I checked my mirrors and then out of nowhere she appeared across the road.

"All to save a couple of seconds instead of walking up to the crossing."

Footage from the incident shows the woman failing to pay any attention to the lorry, seemingly unaware of how close she came to a collision.

The lorry driver told how he was puzzled as to why someone would put a child's life in danger, rather than use a designated pedestrian crossing which was near by.

Stef, who did not report the incident to the police, said: "When she got to the other side of the road there was no acknowledgement at all, she didn't look round at me or put her hands up or react to what had just happened.

"I'm out on the roads every day so I see stuff all the time, but I've never been in an accident.

"That's the closest I've ever come to causing harm to someone on the roads.

"If she had just been that bit shorter she would have been killed.

"People should just take their time crossing the road and use the proper crossings – especially if they are with children.

"It's not worth it for just a matter of saving a couple of seconds."
