Newport victim Eve Smith revealed heartache at sister’s crash death years before she was also killed in smash

GWENT crash victim Eve Smith revealed her own heartbreak at losing her sister to a horror car smash eight years previously.

Eve, 21, was found dead with two pals - the second tragedy to hit her family after Xana Doyle was killed in a smash in 2018.

Darcy Ross and Rafel Jeanne, 24, were also killed in the smash in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Meanwhile Sophie Russon and Shane Loughlin remain in critical condition in hospital.

They lay beside the bodies of their friends for 48 hours before being discovered by a member of the public.

The tragedy comes eight years after Eve’s sister Xana also died in a car crash - with the family revealing their heartache on the Sky documentary This is our Family.

The young woman had been getting a lift home from Sakhawat Ali, then 23, who was high on cocaine and cannabis and twice the drink-drive limit.

His cousin Shabaz Ali, then 21, was also on drugs - and grabbed the car's handbrake “as a joke”.

At the time of her death, Eve told of her heartbreak at losing her older sister.

She wrote on Facebook: "I never ever thought I’d have to say that or even think about it but it’s all I do.

"No one will understand the agony and heartache I feel when I hear her name or see her picture.

"It's so hard to understand or accept that she’s gone and I’m never going to be able to see her again.

“A million times I’ve needed her and a million times I’ve cried. If my love alone could have saved her she never would have died.”

Another of Eve’s sisters yesterday paid tribute to the 21-year-old.

Sherridan Borg, 23, said: “Eve, My beautiful little sister I've cried laughed and fought with you every week, but I've never been without you.

“We always said, 'I got you always', but now I'm sat here feeling so empty because you're not here with me anymore, and I can't accept this."

It comes as police have referred themselves to a watchdog for an investigation.

Today Assistant Chief Constable Jason Davies of South Wales Police said: “Our thoughts are with the families of all those affected by this tragic incident.

It comes as...

“Specialist officers are carrying out an investigation to piece together what has happened.

“Family liaison officers are supporting the families involved at what must be a hugely difficult time for them.

“To ensure independent oversight, South Wales Police has referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, as is usual in these circumstances.”

A spokesperson added that “investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances of the incident, including when the collision took place”.
