‘Lovely’ pensioner, 89, found dead at home in quiet Somerset town, sparking arrest of man, 41

A "LOVELY" pensioner has tragically been found dead at his home in a quiet Somerset town.

Police have launched a murder inquiry after officers found Frederick Burge's lifeless body at his home in Glastonbury.

Emergency services reported to the 89-year-old's property at around 12.30pm on Sunday and made the discovery.

A 41-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder has since been released on police bail.

Dozens of tributes appeared on social media after Mr Burge's death, with many describing him as "lovely".

One former friend wrote online: "Fred was a lovely man, our thoughts are with the family."

Another wrote: "Thoughts are with the family, he was great friends with my late parents."

Avon and Somerset Police said their thoughts were with Mr Burge's family "at this extremely difficult time".

They reassured locals in the quiet town that they were "working tirelessly" to "identify those responsible."

Detective Inspector Neil Meade said: "This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with Frederick’s family at this extremely difficult time.

"Specially trained liaison officers are supporting them and will keep them updated as our inquiry progresses.

"A team of detectives are working tirelessly to establish exactly what happened to Frederick and identify those responsible for his death.

"Specialist crime scene investigators have carried out a forensic examination of the scene while we continue to review CCTV from the area.

“We understand people will be shocked by this incident and the neighbourhood policing team are carrying out high-visibility patrols to provide reassurance.
